Hiba Alhejazi is a Junior Program Associate at Lapis’ Levant office. Her specialized experience lies in the MENA region as she has worked on communication and refugee/migration projects across a range of Media and NGO organizations. This has afforded her deep and strategic insights into the regions social, economic and political complexities.
Prior to joining Lapis, Hiba worked as a Creative Coordinator & Researcher at Alaraby Television Networks’ London headquarters. She was integral in the networks’ launch, assisting the channel’s live broadcast across Europe, the Middle East & North Africa. She also helped form the channel’s in-house Creative Department and establish its specialized animation team. During this time, Hiba worked closely with the first BAFTA award winning Arab Director, Yousif al-Khalifa, to produce a range of creative animation shorts that tackled issues such as human rights, refugeehood, democracy, education and empowerment.
Hiba has also worked extensively in the humanitarian sector alongside a range of grass-root organizations and NGOs across the globe, such as Islamic Relief and CADFA. During her time in the sector, she sourced funding, fostered communal linkages, held workshops & seminars, and engaged in intercultural dialogue projects. The knowledge gained also led Hiba to help launch an organization that provided on-ground humanitarian assistance to 6 refugee camps in Europe caught in the 2015/16 EU refugee crisis.
Hiba attended the School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS) in London, where she graduated with a Master’s degree in Middle East Politics and a Bachelor’s degree in Politics and Development Studies. She is a native English speaker and is fluent in both Modern Standard and Colloquial Arabic (Levant).
